Hi Andrea,

To find National Geographic in the Online Library, click on A-Z of Online Journals.  Then type National Geographic in the search bar.  The first result in your results list (shown below) will tell you which databases you can find National Geographic in and for what date range.  To search within National Geographic, click on one of the database links (such as Academic Search Complete):

In the new tab that opens, you will want to click on the link for Search within this publication.  You can then enter your search terms in the second line in the advanced search (the journal title of National Geographic will populate the first search box).  Some good search terms for you would be:

  • "rite of passage"
  • "rite of passage" AND the name of the culture you are researching
  • "rite of passage" AND America*
  • "rites of passage" AND adolescen* (or the type of rite of passage you are interested in)

Be sure you enter the search terms as listed above.  The quotation marks will bring back the exact phrase, and the * will bring back adolescent, adolesence, adolescents, etc.  If you want to bring back only records with the full text article attached, be sure you check off the full text box.  If you want to bring back only scholarly or peer-reviewed articles, be sure you check the peer-reviewed box.  Some other databases you may want to check (other than searching specifcally within National Geographic) would be:

  • Humanities Source
  • OmniFile Full Text Mega
  • Academic Search Complete
  • ProQuest Central

You can use the above search terms in those databases as well.  You may want to select advanced search for more control over your search.

Please let us know if you have any other questions!
