I would recommend using Hoover's Academic.  You can find Hoover's Academic listed alphabetically under Find Articles and More.  In Hoover's Academic, you will then want to click on the Companies tab and search for Amazon.com.  

Once you are on the company record for Amazon, I would recommend looking at the Company Description on the left hand side of the page.  You may want to click on "Read Full Description" and "Read Company History" to find answer your questions about Amazon.
