How can I locate or search for scholarly sources related to the subject of multiculturalism counselor and working with female Muslims?
Answer
Hello,
Thank you for contacting the Argosy University Library.
To find information for counselors in training who would like to know how to better serve female clients who identify with being Muslim, there are a few different places you can look.
To find books on Muslim women, look under "Find Books" and search using "Counseling" and "Muslim." I found a few titles that might be useful:
Haddad, Yvonne Yazbeck, Smith, Jane I., and Moore, Kathleen M.. Muslim Women in America : The Challenge of Islamic Identity Today. Cary, US: Oxford University Press (US), 2006.
Burke, Mary Thomas, Chauvin, Jane Carvile, and Miranti, Judith G.. Religious and Spiritual Issues in Counseling : Applications Across Diverse Populations. Florence, US: Routledge, 2004.
There are also a number of books on multicultural counseling that include chapters or case studies/ vingettes on counseling Muslims, or Muslim women, such as:
Erickson Cornish, Jennifer A., Schreier, Barry A., and Nadkarni, Lavita I., eds. Handbook of Multicultural Counseling Competencies. Hoboken, US: Wiley, 2010.
Sue, Derald Wing, and Sue, David. Counseling the Culturally Diverse : Theory and Practice (5th Edition). Hoboken, NJ, USA: Wiley, 2010.
To find articles, I'd look in the PsycARTICLES/ PsycINFO database, which is found under "Find Articles." Using the key words "Counseling" "Muslim" "and "Women," I found a number of relevant articles, including:
Cook-Masaud, C., & Wiggins, M. I. (2011). Counseling muslim women: Navigating cultural and religious challenges. Counseling and Values, 55(2), 247-256. doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/j.2161-007X.2011.tb00035.x
Roysircar, G. (2003). Religious differences: Psychological and sociopolitical aspects of counseling. International Journal for the Advancement of Counselling, 25(4), 255-267. doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1023/B:ADCO.0000005525.71147.e8
I hope this will provide you with a good start on your research. Of course if you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. We're happy to help.
Best,
Fay
