How do I discern whether a publication is scholarly and/or peer reviewed?
Is Psychotherapy Networking a scholarly publication?
Answer
Thank you for contacting the Argosy University Library.
To determine whether a publication is scholarly, you can take a look at the following characteristics:
- Authors
- Are the author names provided?
- Are the authors' credentials provided?
- If credentials are provided, are they relevant to the information being provided?
- Publishers
- Who is the publisher?
- Is the publisher an academic institution, scholarly, or professional organization?
- Audience
- Who is the intended audience?
- Is the language used in the publication geared towards a scholarly audience or to the general public? Does the publication contain complex terminology or jargon?
- Content
- Is the content relevant?
- Are sources cited? If so, how long is the source list?
- Are conclusions based on research evidence?
- Does the publication contain advertisements?
- Currency/Timeliness
- Is the date of publication noted?
- Is the information provided within a reasonable time frame for the topic you're researching?
- About Us or Information for Authors Page
- Take a look at the About Us or the Information for Authors page. These pages will provide you with a description, scope, and purpose of the publication. If the publication is peer-reviewed, it will be noted as such on this page.
I am going off the assumption that you meant Psychotherapy Networker rather than Psychotherapy Networking. In the About Us page, it is noted that this publication is a magazine rather than a journal. In addition, there a number of advertisements throughout the publication. As a result, I would not consider this to be a scholarly or peer-reviewed publication.
