How do I find dictionaries and references that are adequate or acceptable for doctoral dissertations?

Thanks for contacting the Library.  Dictionaries and encyclopedias and other reference books typically are not acceptable as academic sources, unless they are the actual objects of research.  I don't know the purpose of your use of such sources.  Are you trying to define terms to be used in your research?  If so, you may want to consult with your committee members to determine the best such sources in your field of study.  Perhaps they can guide you to specific dictionaries of terminology in you discipline.  For basic definition of terms, many standard dictionaries are valuable, such as Oxford, Webster's, American Heritage, etc.  I'm not sure if I am interpreting your question as you intended, so let us know if you need further assistance.
